Mystery Creek, Feb. 13, 2000

New Zealand has hosted more International old car rallies than you can shake a stick at, since the first one in 1965. Some half-dozen in fact, with the 1996 event at Christchurch, which celebrated the Vintage Car Club's 50th Birthday, which attracted about 1600 entrants.

"Royal & SunAlliance" actually find old and classic cars a good insurance bet in NZ. So they foster their use, and came up with generous sponsorship, so that we drivers could celebrate the new millennium by getting together at Hamilton, about 100kms south of Auckland, from 6 - 14 Feb. The original rather optimistic hope was for 2000 entrants, but in the final washup the figure was nearer 1000, with the oldest being an 1891 Panhard & Lavassor.

I lent both our vintage Fiats to friends from Australia with similar interests, but I did visit the public "Open Day"... We motored over in the 124 Spider, and through all the dust and heat took a few general interest photos to give you an idea of what a smorgasbord of vehicles there was to suit every appetite.

Arrol Johnston

Yes there really is an AJCAR. It's actually an Arrol Johnston made in Scotland

Empire

The number plate was a play on the word Waikato - the area where the rally was held and where the owner lives

International

This International "High-Wheeler" was contentedly chugging away at about 100 RPM

Star

I had a 1913 4 seater Star, but not chain driven like this one

Aero Morgan

Another car with something different right out front - 1929 1100cc Aero Morgan

Clement Bayard

This little Clement Bayard got all "fired up" with a "backfire"!

Sizaire & Naudin

Sizaire & Naudin

Sizaire et Naudin were among the first to appreciate the benefits of independent front suspension

Goggomobile

Also small, and apparently now collectable - Goggomobile

Just in case the promised good weather turned to s**t!
